CHM 340 Biochemistry I

This course is the first tem of a two-term overview of modern biochemistry. It focuses on the structure and function of the four main classes of biomolecules: proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. Students will learn how their remarkably different functions like structure, catalysis, and information transfer can be explained in terms of their molecular structures. This class requires Organic Chemistry II (CHM 222) as a prerequisite, but draws heavily on all three previous classes of chemistry (CHM 131/134, 221, and 222). There will be three hours of lecture each week.
